A Brilliant Smile Part 1

I have partnered with Smile Brilliant Ventures for this post. While I have received product and compensation, my thoughts, words, and smile are my own. Please note that I am not a medical expert. Though I am sharing my experience with this product, you should seek the advice of your own dentist before beginning any program like this.

My focus in this post is not on the visual results (those will be in the second post), but on the ease of the experience of using Smile Brilliant and how it has actually improved my approach to dental care.

As a kid, I loved Kool-Aid, pop, and other sugary drinks. As an adult, I love coffee. And while those beverages, and various sugary snacks, may bring a smile to my face, they also stain the very smile they produce. So when I had the opportunity to partner with Smile Brilliant – I jumped at it.

The Process

One of the coolest things about the entire process is that the kit arrives at your home and other than one trip to mail your molds – every thing is done from the comfort of your home. Here’s what my experience was like:

The kit arrived and I followed the simple directions to make the mold of my teeth. There are trays for both the upper and lower set of teeth. Oh, and don’t worry – just in case you mess up the initial setting of the molds, there is extra molding material. If you have ever made a mold in the dentist office, it is the same experience. I won’t lie, this is also the messiest part of the process. A lot of drool was involved in the making of the mold, but since it is done in the privacy of your own home the cleanup is easy and your dignity is safe from scorn.

After completing the mold, I was able to easily drop it in the mail (postage is prepaid) and wait for my trays to come back. For those who may be accident prone, or just plain forgetful, there is an option to order a second backup set of trays. You can also order more gel at a discounted price.

About a week later, my trays arrived at my doorstep. Everything else that I needed (whitening gel and sensitivity gel) had been delivered with the original kit.

The rest of the process was pretty simple as well.

  • First you brush your teeth with just water. Make sure your teeth are clean.
  • Apply a thin layer of whitening gel to your trays.
  • Wear the trays anywhere from 45 minutes to three hours. This would depend upon the sensitivity of your teeth (I had no discomfort) and your schedule.
  • After that round, you brush your teeth again – this time with toothpaste.
  • Rinse and dry your trays.
  • Apply a thin layer of sensitivity gel to the trays.
  • Wear the trays for another 15-20 minutes.
  • Do not consume food or beverage for at least 30 minutes after you are done.

7-14 applications are recommended. The good news? You receive enough applications to not only complete the process, but to also do some  maintenance applications.

I honestly thought the entire process would be more difficult and was worried that it might be painful as I do have sensitive teeth. Instead, I found the experience to be painless – in all senses of the term.

In addition, I actually learned a bit more about tooth care. As a dad, I can look back at some of the mistakes I made (several fillings ago) and share those errors with my kids as I teach them about tooth care. Things as simple as the effect that the foods we eat have on the enamel of our teeth. The importance of good, healthy routines in both the morning and the evening when caring for your chompers.

In my part 2 post, I will share my results (which I am very happy with) and also the plan I have for maintenance. In the meantime, I’m gonna go ahead and take the company’s advice and #smilefearlessly.
